Diomed asked Stream PD to evaluate the ergonomics of their Endovenous Laser Treatment surgical procedure and then design any products needed to ensure an optimal procedure. We started by conducting extensive user research at leading hospitals across the country.

First we needed to learn about each step in the process of using the fiber for vein ablation using industry standard training tools.

We conducted in depth user interviews at 3 leading hospitals with 3 doctors to gain an understanding of the context of use.

We also researched how the kits are stored and managed.

We looked at how people decide and find the fiber they want.

As a result of our research, we identified the opportunity to manage the fiber, prevent it from uncoiling after removal from the sterile packaging, and dispense it from either the left or right side. We generated multiple concepts, refined the design and tested our functional prototypes. The result is a proprietary hand-held product that dispenses the fiber smoothly from either side. It fits a variety of fibers, is easy to use, and is cost effective to manufacture.

Our brainstorming sessions used rough materials for quick mock ups and sketches to explore concepts.

Our research also showed differences in how surgeons of varying experience levels approached these procedures. We identified the need to create multiple pathways for both novices and experts to achieve their different goals. We designed pre-packaged trays of fibers so Diomed can meet the needs of all their customers. These therapy kits are modular, and were designed for easy dispensing and shipping. We also created visual graphics for size and type so they can be quickly and easily used.
